You need:
- The Germination Kit (consists of spongepots and Bacto powder)
- Seeds
- Measuring cup and water
- Perlite
- A propagator
Step 1. To start, you need one decilitre of water (just under half a cup) with a temperature of around 25 degrees Celcius (77 degrees Fahrenheit). Open the sachet of Bacto and pour in the contents.
Step 2. Pour the Bacto-water over the spongepots, making sure to moisten each one evenly.
Step 3. Now, make a slight hollow about 5 mm (0.2 inches) deep in the soil of each pot. Make sure the hole created is slightly wider than the seed, and not too deep! There should be only the barest layer of soil covering the seed.
Step 4. Finally, place one seed in each hollow created (so one per spongepot). Which side of the seed is up does not matter. The seedling will find its way to the surface while the root will grow in the other direction. Place the tray of pots in a warm (21-27 degrees Celcius, 70-80 degrees Fahrenheit) location.
We strongly recommend that you place the tray of pots in a propagator lined with perlite. Keep the perlite moist but not wet. This will help keep the moisture levels up. The propagator environment ensures constant temperature and humidity levels. Without these measures, the spongepots will dry out easily. Also make sure the spongepots are under lights the whole time.
Now it's time to exercise patience! Cannabis seeds will need a day to a week to germinate. Do not try to open the spongepots to peek inside during this time - you will damage the seedling! Once the seedling has broken the surface and unfurled its cotyledons, wait for it to grow about 5 centimetres (2 inches) high before very carefully removing it from the spongepot to plant. Sometimes, the husk of the seed may still be stuck to one of the leaves. Do not try to remove it - it will usually fall off of its own accord, and trying to peel it off early will stress or damage the seedling.
